Anthony Powell, patient
'When the treatment involving the Ruthenium Plaque was explained to me I have to admit I was extemely apprehensive. Scared would be a better way of putting it! I could only believe that I was about to endure the worst week of my life and could not believe anything to the contrary. Once I had decided that I really had no option, I needed to get it done asap.
This was the start of realising how committed to patient wellbeing the team at Sheffield are.
I was in hospital for five days and I can honestly say it was nothing like I feared. Any post op pain was quickly dealt with and monitored so it never returned. The nursing staff were just great and the food was surprisingly apetising too! As I had double vision whilst the plaque was in place, the reading material I took wasn't any use but I had audio books which I would thoroughly recommend.
Also I am sure that doing what the medical team suggested I did whilst in hospital, helped with the recovery. They do know what they are talking about!
Once home, after a few days, I wanted to get out and about. I found that the slightest breeze seemed like an icy blast in the eye. A cheap pair of ski goggles did the trick. It was January.
After just a month I was back to normal.
I found that the care I received in any of the opthalmology departments at Sheffield to be first class and especially the oncology team who are all dedicated, caring professionals that left me feeling that I could not have been treated better anywhere.'
